Here’s what you need to know:

Doctor Odyssey has been keeping audiences guessing since it premiered last September, and now fans are convinced that the latest episode has confirmed their biggest theory

Fans of Doctor Odyssey have shared their predictions that the latest episode is a crucial piece of evidence supporting their major theory about the show.

Co-created by Ryan Murphy, the series premiered in September 2024. Since its early episodes, viewers have been spinning theories that there will be a dramatic plot twist at the end of the series, potentially revealing that the entire storyline is just a fever dream.

There’s a growing belief among fans that the protagonist, Doctor Max Bankman (portrayed by Joshua Jackson), never actually recovered from his COVID illness and is instead caught in a purgatorial state between life and the afterlife.

Theorists suggest that The Odyssey ship is symbolic of heaven and that Max is being subtly nudged towards accepting his passage into the afterlife.

Despite these theories seeming quite far-fetched, the audience is aware that the show is no stranger to over-the-top narratives, which gives some credibility to fans’ predictions.

After watching episode fifteen, which aired last Thursday (17th April), fans are even more confident that the ‘fever dream’ theory may be accurate, reports the Mirror US.

In this most recent instalment, Max disembarks from the ship to visit his family. Upon arrival, he’s greeted by none other than his identical twin brother, a character whom audiences were unaware of until now.

During his visit, the doctor interacts with his nieces and sister-in-law, who makes a telling remark: “I looked up that boat you’re on, it looks like heaven.”

As the episode unfolds, Max’s twin brother shares that Max’s recurring illnesses during his teenage years significantly strained their once-close bond, causing Max to miss numerous pivotal events.

This twist has led viewers to speculate that Merrill might be a product of Max’s imagination, symbolizing the life he could have led if not for his health issues.

Under a TikTok clip of the episode, one fan hypothesised: “I’m convinced that the whole show is a dream and the visit to his brother is what his life could have looked like had he not gotten sick as a teen.”

Another viewer concurred, suggesting: “100% this is all a fever dream and his ‘twin’ is like a sliding doors thing and it’s what his life would have been like if he hadn’t been sick.”

Interestingly, someone unfamiliar with the show also picked up on the twin plotline, sensing an impending twist. “I’ve never seen this (but probably will after this) but I feel like he either doesn’t have a twin at all or the twin is dead. I blame this on my true crime/thriller obsession,” they remarked.

On Reddit, a dedicated fan initially sceptical of the theory confessed to becoming “convinced after this episode.”

Doctor Odyssey streams on Disney+ every Friday.
