Here’s what you need to know:
A water main has burst on Borrowdale Crescent in Didsbury
Householders have described being forced to flee their homes following a deluge caused by a burst water main. A number of homes in and near Borrowdale Crescent in Didsbury have been affected tonight.
The drama is said to have started in the afternoon as engineers were working to fix a small leak – but the main burst and pictures and video showed gardens nearby under water. The road where the burst happened is said to have suffered serious damage.
It is believed the water has got into two properties but the deluge is threatening to inundate 30 others, the fire service has said.
One resident, who declined to be named, claimed some homes had been ‘destroyed’.
She continued: “My three children were caught in it and I had to wade through the non-existent road to get them to safety in one of the homeowners’ gardens until the fire service could help me carry them to safety.
“I am hoping that United Utilities will be held to account for this.”
Emma Radcliffe said: “I went into my garden and heard what sounded like a massive water fall and a lot of people shouting. From then on everything’s just flooded.
“Our drains are blocked. We’re OK at the moment as the water hasn’t reached the door but in some places the water is knee-deep.
“We’ve tried to get water to go into the drains but we’ve just given up because there’s nothing we can do. At one one point (the burst main) was spurting 6ft into the air. It’s just gushing like a water fall.”
A United Utilities spokesperson said: “We are currently dealing with a burst water main on Borrowdale Crescent in Didsbury, Manchester.
“Our team is on site to isolate the burst and fix the issue as quickly, and as safely as possible. Partners from Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are assisting the efforts.
“Thank you for your patience and we will provide you with further updates when available.”
It is understood no homes have yet been evacuated. Firefighters are at the scene as well as officers from Greater Manchester Police.
A spokesman from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed two properties have been flooded and there remains a risk to 30 other homes.
