Ruben Amorim wants to sign a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window two years after Manchester United moved on David de Gea, Dean Henderson and Matej Kovar.

De Gea is now the number one at Fiorentina, while Kovar won the double with Bayer Leverkusen as their backup ‘keeper last season. Henderson, however, is the one who has returned to haunt United.

Since signing for Crystal Palace, the England international has not conceded a single goal against his former employers across four appearances.

The first was cut short inside 20 minutes last year in the League Cup third round, but the three since have a 6-0 combined scoreline.

United effectively replaced Henderson with Altay Bayindir, but the Turkey international has yet to make his Premier League debut, at least up to this weekend’s match with Newcastle United.

Now, as Onana is concerned about being dropped, Henderson has re-established himself as the backup to Jordan Pickford for England and those two, plus Onana, are tied for the third in the Golden Glove race with nine clean sheets.

However, there is seemingly no chance of Henderson returning to Old Trafford anytime soon, outside of when Palace play there again next season. There is not known to be a buy-back clause in the deal United agreed to when selling the goalkeeper.

That is despite significant speculation about the potential inclusion of one when Henderson spent a season on loan at Nottingham Forest the previous season.

But, as the Manchester Evening News reported at the time, sources said the player would refuse any such clause the club might attempt to insert.

After burning bridges during his final year as a United player in various interviews – which Henderson claimed he could not do while still at the club – any notion of a return appears remote.
