Kevin De Bruyne will be waving goodbye to Manchester City at the end of the season
Kevin De Bruyne has yet to reveal his next challenge, despite having previously held conversations with Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Diego.
The Belgian announced last week he would be leaving Manchester City at the end of the season. De Bruyne signed from Wolfsburg in 2015 and will bring to an end ten years at the Etihad.
Given the speculation about where his next challenge might lie, clubs are staying alert to his situation. However, they will have to wait to make an approach with Inter Miami holding discovery rights in the MLS, according to ESPN.
That means they will have the first chance to negotiate with De Bruyne, should he choose to play in North America’s top-flight. MLS rules state that clubs can add up to five players to their discovery list at any time.
By including a player on the list, they gain the exclusive right to initiate negotiations first, without competition from other MLS teams. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham could soon hold talks with De Bruyne about a free transfer.
Inter Miami will participate in the Club World Cup and Leagues Cup this summer, in addition to the ongoing MLS regular season which started at the end of February.
The City captain was heavily linked with a move to San Diego FC last summer but sporting director Tyler Heaps, dismissed the idea of his arrival due to financial concerns.
“I’ve had conversations with him, but I’ll tell you what: Those wages won’t fit our budget at the moment in terms of what his expectations are,” Heaps said at the time.
Announcing his decision to depart the club last week, the midfielder wrote on social media: “Dear Manchester… Seeing this, you probably realise where this is heading.
“So I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player. Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes.
“That day is here— and you deserve to hear it from me first. Football led me to all of you—and to this city. Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life.
“This city. This club. These people… gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what — we won EVERYTHING.
“Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye. Suri, Rome, Mason, Michèle, and I are beyond grateful for what this place has meant to our family. “Manchester’ will forever be on our kids’ passports— and more importantly, in each of our hearts. This will always be our HOME.
“We cannot thank the city, club, staff, teammates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride. Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter. Let’s enjoy these last moments together! Much love, Kdb.”
De Bruyne has won a total of 18 trophies during his time in Manchester – six Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Super Cups and one Club World Cup. In addition to those, he also received two Player of the Year awards.
