Here’s what you need to know:
Man Utd are reportedly keen on signing Como teenager Assane Diao this summer following his impressive start to life in Serie A.
Como head coach Cesc Fabregas reckons it’s not a given that Assane Diao will leave for Manchester United or other potential suitors this summer – even if his asking price is matched.
The 19-year-old arrived in Italy in the January transfer window – after being sold by Real Betis to make room for Antony on loan. Since arriving at Fabregas’ team, Diao has proven to be a bargain for the mid-table Serie A side, scoring six goals in 14 appearances in the Italian top-flight.
Such form has caught the eye in Europe, particularly, with United, who have made it clear they want to sign future stars to rebuild their squad. On Sunday afternoon, Diao featured for 83 minutes in the 1-0 victory over Torino which distanced his club from a potential relegation battle at the end of the season.
Discussing the forward’s future, former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder, Fabregas, insisted that his team were as determined as ever before to keep hold of the youngster. “There is no mentality of speculating and selling, they come here to grow and improve the team,” Fabregas said when asked about the player.
“Then obviously, Manchester [United] can come and ask for Diao by offering €40million (£35million), but it is not a given that he will leave us. The objective is to create a path, with players who are functional to the characteristics, working with them.
“Obviously the value increases, but the important thing is that they are the right players for us.”
After the heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, it’s clear that the Reds are in desperate need of a rebuild this summer, masterminded by Ruben Amorim.
As mentioned above, Ineos have insisted they want to sign future stars with resale value, rather than established names, this summer. The Reds will, also, be working under a strict budget due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns and may need to sell first-team players in order to buy.
