The actor was given a formal warning by Big Brother
Celebrity Big Brother’s Mickey Rourke has apologised to JoJo Siwa over ‘homophobic’ comments the actor made on the programme.
The actor and US singer are among the 13 famous faces taking part in the latest season of the ITV reality show.
On Wednesday night (April 9) viewers saw Mickey being given a ‘formal warning’ over ‘unacceptable language’ towards JoJo.
Mickey initially quizzed the former Dance Moms star if she ‘likes girls or boys’, to which she informed him that her partner is non-binary.
“If I stay longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore,” Mickey said.
Told by JoJo that ‘she’ll still be gay’ and ‘still be in a very happy relationship’ by the end of the show, before later in the episode he told Chris Hughes he’s ‘going to vote the lesbian out real quick’.
JoJo told the Oscar nominee that his comment was ‘homophobic’, before Mickey later said he ‘needs a *** [another name for a cigarette]’.
Assuring Chris that his comments weren’t about JoJo, Big Brother called Mickey into the diary room to discuss ‘rules regarding unacceptable language and behaviour’.
“Mickey, do you understand how this language could be offensive to your Housemates or the viewing public…
“As a result, Big Brother is giving you a formal warning. Further language or behaviour of this nature could lead to you being removed from the Big Brother house. Mickey, do you understand,” Big Brother said.
Mickey said in response: “I apologise. I don’t have dishonourable intentions – I’m just talking smack you know. I wasn’t taking it all so serious. I didn’t mean in it any bad intentions and if I did, sorry.”
Telling his housemates that he got ‘chewed out’, Mickey was informed by Trisha Goddard that it’s ‘not what you say, but how it lands’.
After Mickey said he ‘didn’t say it out of meanness’, Chris told him: “I understand you might have thought it would be uninsulting but it’s the way it’s perceived on other people. JoJo was very upset earlier, bless her.”
Turning to JoJo, Mickey said: “You were? Sorry. Are we ok?”
JoJo replied: “As a future, using the word f** is not an acceptable word.”
The rest of the Housemates then discussed the situation with Mickey in an attempt to help him understand why his comments were offensive.
Drag Queen Danny Beard said: “I disagree with how it panned out from how you handled it but that also doesn’t mean I’m going to dig my feet in and ostracise you in the group I’d love you to see it from another point of view, I’d love you to be part of the group and I don’t want you to feel like you’re not.”
Approaching JoJo later in the episode, Mickey said: ““I want to apologise. I’ve got a habit of having a short fuse. And I don’t mean nothing by it. I do mean it [sorry]. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t say it to you.”
With JoJo saying she ‘appreciated the apology’, Mickey later talked to her and Danny about drag queens.
“It’s beautiful to see how the drag community has elevated over the years,” JoJo said.
Assured that ‘it’s ok to say drag’, Mickey admitted that he finds ‘it gets confusing’ trying to say the right words.
“Anything is ok to say in context and intention – that’s what matters. And if you say something wrong but you didn’t know and you’re open to hearing – all good,” JoJo said.
Celebrity Big Brother airs at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
