A busy road through Saddleworth will close this weekend as major works take place on a key railway line.

Part of the huge TransPennine Route Upgrade project will be taking place in Uppermill on Saturday (April 26) and Sunday.

Track renewal works will be taking place on the Uppermill Viaduct, which runs over Uppermill High Street, near to Dobcross New Road.

Uppermill High Street will be closed for 31 hours from 6am on Saturday until 11am on Sunday while the works take place.

The same area will be closed again on the following weekend, from 6am on Saturday, May 3, until 11am on Sunday, May 4.

Rail passengers are also being warned to expect disruption, with a number of replacement bus services set to run between Stalybridge and Huddersfield, via Oldham.

In a post on the TransPennine Express website, a spokesperson said: “Network Rail is carrying out major improvement works between Deighton and Mossley on Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade, and between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge on Sunday, Aprill 27, as part of regular engineering work.

“Train services will not be calling at Huddersfield and will be diverted.

“Services may be running to an amended timetable or replaced with a bus service, meaning journey time may be extended.”

A number of changes are being made to services which run between Manchester and Newcastle, Redcar, Hull, Scarborough and York.

Full details of diversions and rail replacement bus services can be found on the TransPennine Express website here.
