Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes made his frustrations with his team-mates clear in the first half of Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The Reds’ promising situations against Manchester City were repeatedly ruined by poor decision-making, much to the Portuguese player’s annoyance. Firstly, he criticised Alejandro Garnacho for not passing the ball quickly enough as United attempted to gain momentum. Shortly after, Patrick Dorgu became the target of Fernandes’ frustration.

Gary Neville, former United captain and current commentator for the game, sided with Fernandes over the Garnacho incident and suggested that Dorgu had no excuse for being offside.

“Bruno is having a go at Garnacho and he is right,” Neville commented during Sky Sports’ coverage. “The pass is too slow and it’s behind Fernandes.”

In the first half, Fernandes was also seen chastising United striker Rasmus Hojlund for his movement as the home side searched for an opening goal.

At half-time, the teams were level, with Fernandes himself challenging Ederson in the City goal. However, the match was relatively quiet, with the visitors noticeably missing their top scorer Erling Haaland.

Haaland, who is injured, is unlikely to play again in the league this season. Omar Marmoush took his place but neither the Egyptian nor his supporting cast managed to make much headway.

The most significant chance of the match came during United’s initial attack when Garnacho was fouled by Ruben Dias just outside the box. Bruno Fernandes, however, couldn’t capitalise on the resulting free-kick.

In what was his last Manchester derby, Kevin De Bruyne had confirmed his departure from City at season’s end earlier in the week. Leon Osman, the ex-England midfielder, highlighted De Bruyne’s individual brilliance before the game.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Osman remarked, “You may feel like you’ve done everything you can and played well and then you give Kevin de Bruyne half a yard and he’s stolen the game from you.

“He’s done that singlehandedly at times. Yes he’s had an amazing array of players around him at Manchester City but he is the player that provides that spark. He does stuff that not everyone else is capable of.”
