Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has insisted that – with the support of their home fans – they will be able to progress into the semi-finals of the Europa League next Thursday night.

United head into their return leg against Lyon with the scores level at 2-2 after 90 minutes to forget for goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroonian made two mistakes which led to goals at the Groupama Stadium, the first of which came after just 25 minutes.

Thiago Almada’s whipped free-kick somehow eluded everyone in the centre and beat Onana as the goalkeeper misjudged the bounce of the ball on its way through. United would restore parity, on the stroke of half-time, as Leny Yoro diverted a strike into the back of the net with his head.

The Reds created the better of the opportunities in the second 45 minutes and got their reward with two minutes of normal time remaining. Joshua Zirkzee greeted a cross from close-range to send the away end into delirium.

However, their joy was short-lived as Onana would parry an effort straight into the path of Rayan Cherki to level with the last kick of the game. The frustration among the United players was clear to see at the full-time whistle, but Fernandes has issued a promise – and rallying cry – to the United supporters ahead of next week’s game.

“Old Trafford, we [are] going to make it together,” Fernandes wrote on his story accompanied by a handshake emoji. While the draw in France is still fresh in their memory, the focus for United will transition to the Premier League for now.

On Sunday afternoon, the Reds travel up to high-flying Newcastle United as the home side continue to push for Champions League football next season. Ruben Amorim’s side sit firmly in the bottom half of the table with their best shot at reaching European football being through their Europa League journey.
