Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have responded to Nemanja Matic’s touching social media post after facing Manchester United for the first time since his exit.

Matic, 36, was an unused substitute for Lyon on Thursday night in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final. The midfielder watched on as the French side rescued a 2-2 draw in injury-time through Rayan Cherki.

Both Lyon goals came as a result of Andre Onana mistakes just over 24 hours since the United goalkeeper was involved in a war of words between Matic. Onana revealed how he believed United were better than Lyon at the weekend before Matic hit back.

When asked about his comments, Matic said: “I don’t know, to say that, you need to have cover for something like that. Onana? Pfttt. You know, I respect everyone, but to say that, then you need to give an answer.

If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care of what you’re talking about. If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar say that, I would question myself, but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United modern history, then he needs to show that before he says, so we will see.”

Onana responded to Matic on social media, writing: “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent.

“We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

Unfortunately for Onana, it was Matic who had the last laugh after Onana’s poor save fell to the feet of Cherki for a 95th-minute equaliser. Despite not getting on to the pitch, Matic was active on social media with a number of posts.

He posted a picture of his son Filip posing with some United shirts on his Instagram story by uploading a post of him and six members of the United backroom staff. “Nice to see my brothers again,” the caption read.
