Quick overview:
Man United were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Bruno Fernandes is adamant Manchester United will “fight back” when they face Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Fernandes made the admission after United suffered a 14th Premier League defeat of the season with a whimper at St James’ Park on Sunday, losing 4-1 to Newcastle United.
After Alejandro Garnacho had cancelled out Sandro Tonali’s opener to ensure the two sides went into the half-time break level at 1-1, United were blown away by goals from Harvey Barnes (2) and Bruno Guimaraes.
For United, full focus now switches to the must-win clash with Lyon. The tie is currently level at 2-2 following the first leg in France on Thursday night.
“We will fight back,” Fernandes vowed, speaking to MUTV. “On Thursday, we will fight back.
“We will put everything back on the pitch that we have to do. From tomorrow [Monday] onwards, we are going to put our heads into the game.
“We will have fresh legs and fresh minds, and together with the fans, we are going to do something special again.”
Fernandes paid tribute to United’s fans for their continued support this season, applauding them for their refusal to stop singing in the second half of the defeat at St James’ Park.
On their support, he added: “They never stop. They have been very, very big for us this season. They have been one of the main reasons why this season hasn’t been worse than it actually has.
“They have always been by our side, so it is time for us to pay them back. I am pretty sure this team is very aware of that.
“We are very much aware of what the fans have been doing for us, how much they care about the club, how much they care about the players.
“I know sometimes frustration gets into them but that’s normal. It gets into me on the pitch so it is normal for it to get into them in the stands.
“Everyone is very aware of what we have to do on Thursday. It is going to be a big game for us and a big game for the club. It will be a big game for Lyon, too, but we have to be at the level.”
