A British couple among four people killed in a cable car crash near Naples have been name by Italian media.

Graeme Winn, 65 and Elaine Winn, 58, died in the crash on Thursday (April 17) at Monte Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia, according to reports. The couple lived in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, the BBC reports.

Italian news agency Ansa earlier reported that two British tourists and an Israeli national were among the four who died in the crash, citing Naples mayor Gaetano Manfredi. A fifth person, believed to be a foreign tourist, was also seriously injured in the incident, it was reported.

Initial information suggests that the crash occurred after a traction cable snapped, bringing cable cars to a halt. A number of people were evacuated from another cable car. Firefighters, police and Italy’s alpine rescue service were sent to the scene, which is between the popular tourist areas of Pompeii and Sorrento.

An investigation over multiple manslaughter and culpable disaster charges has been opened by Italian prosecutors, reports suggest.

In a translated post on social media, Vincenzo De Luca, president of Campania, called the day “truly tragic and painful”. He said his thoughts go to those who died or were injured and their families. De Luca also said he was grateful for the rescuers and said an investigation into what happened will be carried out.

Luigi Vicinanza Sindaco, Mayor of Castellammare, said on Facebook that there will be a day of mourning and cancelled all events for the Easter holiday.

The two other victims include the driver of the cable car, named by authorities as 59-year-old Carmine Parlato, and an Israeli woman identified as Janan Suliman.

A fifth person in the cabin, Suliman’s brother, was “extremely seriously injured” in the crash, according to officials, and airlifted to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A British tourist said she saw people being evacuated in a harness from one cable car following the incident. Megan Pacey, 50, from London, was with her husband, James Ross, and their two children when they saw a suspended cable car.

She said: “We were within a minute or two of (the incident) happening.

“They started winching people down from the cable car. We watched the first couple of people come down in a harness and as we left, there was a sense of urgency that had kicked in.”

The public transport firm EAV, which operates the cable car, said the service had reopened a week ago with all the required safety conditions, the Express reports.

The cable car on Mount Faito has been operating since 1952. A similar accident on the line in 1960 left four people dead.
