Emergency services blocked off Rivington Reservoir after ‘grenade type’ devices were found
A popular beauty spot became the scene of a bomb scare this morning after the discovery of two ‘grenade type’ devices.
Police were called to Rivington Reservoir shortly before 8am on Saturday (April 19) after two members of the public spotted the items. A huge cordon has been erected at the upper reservoir on Horrobin Lane as fire crews and explosive ordinance disposal experts worked to make the scene safe.
Revellers hoping to visit the reservoir for a long weekend walk were turned away in droves as police blocked off the roads leading to the beauty spot.

Uniformed figures could be seen carrying out work on the embankment of the reservoir, with a huge emergency services presence on the scene.
An angler who made the worrying discovery spoke to the Manchester Evening News of his shock after spotting the devices in the mud.
“If you just ignored it and kicked them to the side and then a family came down and they weren’t safe, you would never live with yourself,” he said.
“There were families there yesterday with dogs. Kids could have picked that up and thrown it. You just never know. Better safe than sorry – we’re not bomb experts are we?
“It looks like they were thrown there when the water was up, and then when the water’s dropped it exposed them. It’s not every day you come across that.”
A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary said: “A team from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have attended the site on Horrobin LAne and assessed the devices which appear to be training grenades from the 1940s-1960s.
“They were previously deactivated posed no threat. The cordon has now been stood down and the area is open again for public access.”
