Sally Nugent and Jon Kay returned to TV screens with the latest edition of BBC Breakfast on Monday (14 April), engaging audiences with fresh news and interview segments.

Headlining the news was pop icon Katy Perry’s journey beyond Earth, becoming a focal point for conversation. The vocalist will board Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket with five other women, soaring into space.

BBC Breakfast aired a snippet of Katy Perry discussing her role in this historic event and expressing her desire to “inspire” young girls to pursue out-of-this-world opportunities in times ahead.

In a light-hearted exchange with Sally, Jon queried: “Would you?” only for Sally to mistakenly ponder: “Inspire young girls to go to space in the future?”

Clarifying his question, Jon exclaimed, “No, go to space?!” This prompted laughter from Sally as she firmly rejected the idea, saying, “No. Not in a million!”

Echoing her sentiment, Jon concurred that he wouldn’t opt for space travel either, leading Sally to quip: “We’re not good travellers!”

The banter continued, and they considered sending their colleague Carol Kirkwood to space, with Jon suggesting, “We could send Carol, though,” and Sally concurring: “Carol would go!”

Nevertheless, Carol humorously declined their proposition, preferring to keep her feet firmly on Earth.

This pioneering voyage signifies a milestonethe first time since over six decades that a woman has embarked on a space mission without male companionship, reports the Express.

Katy has teamed up with author Lauren Sanchez, broadcaster Gayle King, former aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, and human rights advocate Amanda Nguyen for a momentous space expedition.

These six women comprise the first all-female crew to venture into space since Valentina Tereshkova’s pioneering solo mission in 1963.

Lauren is at the helm of this journey and as Jeff Bezos’ partner, she expressed to Elle magazine her reasons for choosing the members, citing that each had “proven their ability to inspire others”.

As for Katy, she revealed her lifelong aspiration for space adventure, noting that an opportunity like this has been on her mind for nearly two decades the invitation to join the voyage was an obvious decision.
