BBC Breakfast presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were back on the red sofa on Thursday to deliver the latest headlines.
BBC Breakfast viewers were left “reduced to tears” on Thursday when Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt revealed some devastating news. The co-hosts shared that parents of the Southport tragedy would take part in the London Marathon this weekend in tribute to their late daughter.
The tragic incident in July 2024 saw Alice Aguiar, aged nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, and Bebe King, aged six, lose their lives during a Taylor Swift dance workshop in Southport.
With the memory of the three young girls at heart, David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar are preparing to honour their daughters with the grueling 26.2-mile Sunday challenge.
At the start of the show, Naga and Charlie conveyed the sorrowful story. They soon followed up with pre-filmed content featuring the bereaved mothers speaking about the marathon run.

Naga expressed her sentiments by saying: “Our thanks to the parents of Bebe, Elsie, and Alice, we wish you all the best ahead of this weekend’s marathon,” reports the Express.
Supportively, Charlie added: “Yes, let’s hope they can embrace what David said there, that sentiment right there, enjoy the day. Good luck to all of those running on Sunday.”
On social media platform X, one viewer reflected on the segment, commenting: “Put @BBCBreakfast on and at 6:20am reduced to tears watching the Southport families London marathon clip.”
Another responded to the touching tribute by saying: “It’s just so heartbreaking.”
Further conveying the emotional impact, another viewer responded with a crying heart emoji: “As a father-and of a daughter too-can’t imagine their continual pain, hope they raise loads in honour of those 3 beautiful girls.” (sic)
A fourth individual expressed their gratitude, saying: “So grateful to the families of Alice Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe for working with BBC Breakfast.”
Another viewer remarked on the positive action taken by the bereaved: “Doing something positive to help them cope with their tragic loss. Others will benefit and their daughters are remembered.”
In a particularly poignant moment on the show, Elsie’s father was visibly moved to tears as he recounted his daughter’s wish for him to participate in the London Marathon.
With emotion, he shared: “Elsie would be so happy to see me cross the finish line, especially for the London Marathon,” and added, “She’d just be so proud.”
David recalled watching last year’s London Marathon with Elsie and how she encouraged him to run the prestigious event in memory of her grandmother.
He reminisced with a touch of humour: “A little bit of me was like, ‘oh yeah, alright, Els,'” but confessed, “I just never thought I would be running it for these reasons.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
