BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt are said to be at odds with their editor Richard Frediani amidst accusations of bullying.

The relationship between Frediani, who has faced allegations of bullying at both ITN and the BBC, and the presenting duo is reportedly tense.

A BBC senior figure in Salford disclosed that there’s a lack of rapport between Frediani and the show’s key presenters.

An insider shared with The Times: “Frediani has no relationship with Charlie and Naga, which is weird when they are half of his frontline presenting roster,” and noted, “It appears he doesn’t like them and they don’t like him – for whatever reason, they don’t talk to each other.”

The tension has apparently intensified within staff WhatsApp groups, where Frediani’s presence has become contentious, reports the Express.

In March, Deadline revealed that Frediani was at the centre of at least two misconduct complaints, including an incident where he allegedly physically shook a colleague during a confrontation in a newsroom in 2024.

At that juncture, he was said to be oblivious to any formal grievances regarding his behaviour. More recently, reports have surfaced that Munchetty has voiced her concerns about Frediani to the higher-ups at the BBC.

Furthermore, it’s been reported that ITN staff have labelled Frediani as a ‘bully,’ accusing him of shouting, swearing at, and intimidating co-workers. There have been multiple complaints lodged by employees against his alleged misconduct.

Tina Daheley, the newsreader, reportedly had reservations about her involvement with the News at One bulletin, overseen by Frediani. Despite being initially named as a host before the show’s relocation from London to Salford in May, Daheley has remained in the capital for her Radio 2 duties.

Sources claim she was ‘very cross’ upon discovering her image was omitted from a press release detailing the schedule changes, contributing to a sense of discontent. However, there’s no indication that Frediani played a part in this oversight.

This episode isn’t the first instance of reported turmoil within the BBC ranks. Back in 2020, the Mail on Sunday highlighted grievances concerning BBC Breakfast, citing complaints about management and HR practices.

Allegations pointed to an ‘intimidating and bullying’ work environment, prompting some long-standing employees to resign.

An insider disclosed: “There is a normalisation of people crying at work and on their journeys home. From where I see it, there are favourites, and it is made explicitly clear to everyone in the newsroom who they are.”

The BBC has been approached for comment.
