Four people have been killed after a cable car in southern Italy crashed to the ground, after the vehicle’s wire reportedly snapped.
At least four people have been killed after a cable car crashed in southern Italy on Thursday.
One person was also injured, officials said.
The incident took place when the vehicle’s wire snapped causing the car to fall to the ground.
The accident took place at around 3pm this afternoon and has prompted a large search and rescue mission , The Mirror reports.
Three other cables cars carrying 16 people were trapped in the air and have had to be rescued.
Italian media footage has shown rescue teams transferring cars into harnesses.
All of the fatalities are tourists, it has been reported.
Italy’s alpine rescue team responded to the accident at Monte Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia but high winds and fog have hampered rescue efforts.
High winds and heavy fog which have been present in the region are feared to have caused the cable to suddenly break.
The accident takes place a week after the Italian destination reopened for the season after being closed for the winter.
The cable car which connected the Italian town of Castellamare di Stabia, near Naples, with the summit of Mount Faito, has been popular for its views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.
Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of the EAV public transport company in charge of the cable car service, described today’s incident as a “tragedy”.
He wrote on Facebook: “The cabin at the top has crashed, casualties are feared.”
Mayor Luigi Vicinanza Sindaco shared his distress at the incident.
He said in a statement on Facebook: “Due to the serious events of the Faito cable car, all events planned for the Easter holidays are cancelled.”
