Manchester United winger Antony has admitted that events which took place off the pitch affected his career at Old Trafford.

After a promising start to life at United, the Brazilian’s form took a dramatic drop with the former Ajax man never fully recovering. In September 2023, his former partner Gabriela Cavallin alleged that he violently abused her.

A second woman, Ingrid Lana, also made allegations against him which related to a meeting in Manchester. Both Brazilian police officers and Greater Manchester Police investigated the claims made and the winger denied all the allegations presented to him.

In August 2024, the Brazilian police dropped the investigation into Antony. The 25-year-old was never arrested or charged by the authorities.

As of August 2024, the investigation by GMP was still ongoing. Reflecting on his time at United in an interview with ESPN, Antony claimed that what happened in his personal life affected his career with the Reds.

“I think that, apart from my football life, my personal life got in the way a lot, because of the things I went through, the moments I lived there,” he explained. “Like it or not, it’s affected me a lot.

“It’s not for nothing that I went to a World Cup, it’s not for nothing that I was sold to United for a lot of money, and I know my worth. People look at the moment, but they don’t look at the bigger picture, what happens to bring things about.

“So, as I said, my feeling at United was that I had good moments, bad moments too, but of course I could have done more, I could have done better.” Towards the end of his tenure, Erik ten Hag, who brought Antony to the Premier League, chose to drop the winger in favour of Amad and Ruben Amorim continued that thinking when he took charge, leading to the temporary exit in January to Real Betis.

Reflecting on his relationship with Ten Hag, Antony insisted that there was no hard feelings between himself and his ex-manager. “Erik ten Hag is a coach I’m very grateful to,” the Brazilian insisted.

“He helped me a lot in the Netherlands, and in England too, even though the opportunities didn’t come the way I wanted to. But that’s the coach’s choice, I don’t hold any grudges or anything.

“On the contrary, I’m very grateful for everything he’s done with me, for all the conversations too. He’s a coach who will certainly be in this story because he helped me a lot.”

Since moving to Seville, Antony has made 16 appearances for Real Betis scoring four goals and providing four assists in the process. His manager Manuel Pellegrini has expressed his desire to keep the forward beyond this season but admitted that his wages could be a stumbling block.
