Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has responded to his side’s dramatic progression to the Europa League semi-final after an extra-time win over Lyon.

Onana has been the centre of attention throughout the tie; a public war of words with Nemanja Matic was followed by the goalkeeper making mistakes for both goals in the 2-2 draw in the first leg last week. He was subsequently rested by United boss Ruben Amorim for the following Premier League game against Newcastle United, with stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir given his first league start for the club.

That game ended in a 4-1 defeat, and Onana was brought back into the lineup for the second-leg against Lyon at Old Trafford. It looked like it would be an easy passage for United to the final four.

First-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot put them 2-0 up on the night and 4-2 up on aggregate. Onana was spotted celebrating in front of the travelling Lyon supporters after Ugarte’s opener.

United, however, found themselves pegged back in the second half. Second-half goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico made the scoreline 2-2 on the night and 4-4 on aggregate.

Despite Lyon going down to 10 men before extra time, they looked to have turned the game around. Goals from Rayan Cherki and an Alexandre Lacazette penalty put Lyon 4-2 up on the night.

However, in another twist, United completed a turnaround of their own. Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit from the penalty spot with just six minutes remaining.

Kobbie Mainoo then drew level in the 120th minute before Harry Maguire sent Old Trafford wild with an added time goal to make the score 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate.

The goal sparked scenes of wild celebrations around Old Trafford, with Onana running to the touchline to celebrate with manager Amorim. Following the game, he has taken to social media to send a message.

On Instagram he has posted pictures of him celebrating the winner along with a caption. “Built with ONANA MENTALITY,” he wrote along with a fist bump and colour red emoji.

The post has been ‘liked’ by United teammates Leny Yoro and Ethan Wheatley as well as former United full-back Aaron Wan Bisaka.

United will now play Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final of the Europa League. The Spanish side overcame Rangers with a 2-0 victory on Thursday night.
