Andre Onana is almost a week removed from what may well be the nadir of his Manchester United career.

Two mistakes that led to Lyon goals let the French team level up the Europa League quarter-final tie heading into the second leg at Old Trafford. Those errors were only magnified by what the goalkeeper said about believing United were way better than their opponents.

Nemanja Matic taking umbrage with those comments and twice referring to Onana as one of the worst goalkeepers in his club’s history only inflamed the situation further.

Despite later denying being disrespectful to Lyon, that did not stop him from highlighting the absence of any trophies won by the midfielder during five years as a United player.

Matic ultimately did not feature in the first leg. It had also been unclear whether his adversary would in the second.

Altay Bayindir, however, flattered to deceive on his Premier League debut against Newcastle United. Ruben Amorim has now confirmed that Onana will have an opportunity to make amends on Thursday.

Over the past week, their performances have only further highlighted goalkeeper as a problem position, with Amorim refusing to rule out United recruiting in that area over the summer.

As previously reported, Amorim wants another player to challenge Onana next season, while the Cameroon international intends to stay put.

Furthermore, The i Paper reports that Bayindir will likely leave during this summer transfer window for further playing time elsewhere. The publication also claims that Onana is now one of several United players ‘on trial’ for the rest of this season to determine whether he will remain first-choice.

Signing a young goalkeeper is said to be the club’s preference, with re-signing David de Gea described as very unlikely. Instead, there are links to several ‘keepers, including Bart Verbruggen, Diogo Costa, Mike Maignan and Zion Suzuki.

La Stampa has also credited United with an interest in Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, who the club previously signed in 2015. However, the now Serbia international left 18 months later after failing to receive a work permit.
