Here’s what you need to know:
Two more mistakes from Andre Onana have thrown his Man United place and future into doubt.
Andre Onana is concerned he could be dropped by Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim after his latest howlers.
Onana was culpable for both of Lyon’s goals in United’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw four days after he billed United as “way better” than the French side.
Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic dubbed Onana as “one of the worst goalkeepers in the history” of United on the eve of the tie. Onana made errors for Thiago Almada and Rayan Cherki’s goals, the latter a 95th-minute equaliser.
Sources say Onana is uncertain he will start against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday, four days before the return leg against Lyon at Old Trafford. Altay Bayindir is under consideration to make his first Premier League start.
Since Onana joined United in July 2023, he has made more errors leading to goals against Premier League clubs across all competitions than any other goalkeeper. Amorim wants to sign a new ‘keeper in the summer.
Onana, 28, has played 94 times for United and has missed one match through his commitments for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2024. Bayindir has played only seven times for United, having joined the club in the same summer as Onana, and is yet to make his league debut.
Amorim refused to criticise Onana after the match on Thursday night. “It can happen,” Amorim said of Onana’s mistakes. “If you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months. The other thing is we have one more game to change everything and that should be our focus.
“I don’t know (if Matic unsettled Onana), that can happen. The best thing is to look at the goals, all the actions that Andre had in the game, talk with (goalkeeping coaches Jorge) Vital and Craig (Mawson), this is the best way to help any player. It’s to focus on the game, what happened, what we need to improve and then put the player in.
“I didn’t see [Onana], to be honest with you. I use these minutes to try to calm down, to come here to say the right things. It’s normal. I felt the dressing room was really quiet. We draw away, in Europe, that is always hard, but the team is suffering, we need to change that.”
United signed Onana in a £47.2million deal from Inter Milan nearly two years ago.
