Alejandro Garnacho has issued an emotional message on social media after Manchester United’s heavy 4-1 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.

United collapsed after Garnacho’s equaliser as Ruben Amorim’s struggling team slipped down to 14th in the Premier League table. Goals from Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and a brace from Harvey Barnes secured a dominant 4-1 victory for Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park.

The Reds now turn their attention towards Thursday’s do-or-die Europa League quarterfinal second-leg clash against Lyon. Amorim’s men know that victory at Old Trafford will secure a place in the semi-finals as United chase their only chance of silverware this season. Victory in Bilbao on May 21 would also secure a lucrative place in next season’s Champions League.

And Garnacho has emphasised the importance of United’s midweek clash against their Ligue 1 opponents. The Argentine has also vowed for him and his teammates to do better following the Reds’ performance in the North East on his Instagram stories.

“It’s not enough,” he said. “We know you all expect better from us, we’ll learn.

“We need you all at Old Trafford on Thursday. It’s a big day for all of us.”

United boss Amorim, meanwhile, accused his United players of collapsing in the second half of Sunday’s defeat. The Reds’ goal difference is now -7 and worse than 13th-placed Everton’s.

“Yeah, when we suffer the second goal in the beginning of the second half we went down and we need to be better in these moments,” Amorim said post-match. “we need to control it.

“They are already a really, really good team but the mistakes we made during the game helped the team to win confidence and win the game.

“We need to accept that (the lowest points tally) and to move forward and try to do things so much better in the future so we don’t have this kind of season. And then you can see some goals.

“They were doing high pressure and we lose the possession in some moments and some spaces that we cannot lose the possession.

“So we need to improve in a lot of things and our position is a reflection of our performances this season.”
