The latest Manchester United news as talks continue to sign Wolves star Matheus Cunha, with Liam Delap also on the Reds’ wishlist

Alan Shearer believes that signing Matheus Cunha alone will not make a difference to Manchester United.

The Wolves star is reportedly close to a deal with United, who are looking to beat Arsenal and Newcastle United to his signature. MEN Sport understands that sources close to the player say he is ‘optimistic’ a deal could come to fruition.

With Cunha’s contract containing a £62.5million release clause, United may need to sell players to fund a move for the Brazilian. However, Fabrizio Romano, has claimed that the Reds are optimistic a deal can be reached, with negotiations currently ongoing.

That being said, Shearer has claimed that United’s problems won’t be solved by signing Cunha. Speaking to Betfair, the Newcastle United icon said: “Matheus Cunha has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but wouldn’t make a difference for Man United – they’re going to need another six or seven players on top of that.

“He’s just one of the players, if it is going to happen, but yeah I get it and I understand it. The reason why he signed a contract extension at Wolves was so that they could get rid of the release clause to get some decent money for him. United are going to need more than him, but he’ll be a welcome addition, absolutely.

“I don’t know what they’re going to have to pay for him. I suspect it’s quite a hefty amount. Has he got talent? Absolutely. Is he a bit of a maverick? Yeah, but you get that with most good players – they have an edge to them and a side which some people may not like.”

Shearer also pointed out that United might also need to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap in a bid to make a difference to their squad.

“United are missing so much in every position – we could talk all day about what’s gone wrong this season in those positions for them,” he added. “They have also been linked with Liam Delap, one or the other? They need to sign both.

“They need a top-class centre-forward like Delap, but they need someone like Cunha as well. They need players defensively as well – all around the pitch they need reinforcements. Whether they can go out and spend that much, I don’t know. I suspect that may depend whether they get into the Champions League or not.

“He’ll have tons of options, Delap will. When you look at all the clubs who need a centre-forward in the Premier League – Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool, Spurs – there’ll be huge clubs all looking at Delap. There’s no doubt, if it is that amount of money, then he will have big options.”
