Aintree Racecourse has issued a new update after two horses were injured in a fall during the Grand National on Saturday (April 5).

Two horses at this year’s Grand National had to be assessed on course by vets after horrific falls during the race. Broadway Boy and Celebre d’Allen were both injured after falling during the race, which saw 34 horses set off but only 18 finish the course.

Broadway Boy was leading the four-and-a-quarter mile race before falling at the 25th fence. He received immediate care on the track for some time after the race had finished, with the 5pm contest delayed by over 10 minutes as treatment continued.

Celebre d’Allen was sent off at a 125-1 shot under Micheal Nolan, with the rider pulling up the Philip Hobbs and Johnson White-trained runner after jumping the final fence. The 13-year-old then collapsed on the racecourse.

Authorities said that both horses were able to walk onto a ‘horse ambulance’ and return to the stables, where they were given care following the incidents.

The British Horseracing Authority previously said: “Both horses received immediate and extensive treatment by the vets, also calling on the first class facilities and various teams on site. This treatment and assessment will continue into the evening.”

In an update, Aintree shared a video of Broadway Boy and Celebre d’Allen walking into a horse box. It read: “This is great to see.

A jockey has been banned from racing for 10 days after the horse he was riding collapsed on the course. Stewards said Nolan has been suspended for 10 days after inquiring into his decision to continue to ride Celebre d’Allen after jumping the penultimate fence. The ban will take place between April 19-26 and May 3 and 5.

A stewards’ report read: “An inquiry was held to consider whether Micheal Nolan, the rider of Celebre d’Allen, had continued in the race when the horse appeared to have no more to give and was clearly losing ground after the second-last fence.

“The rider and the veterinary officer were interviewed, and recordings of the incident were viewed. The rider was suspended for 10 days.”
