The series boasts one of the stars of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series
The co-creator of Adolescence’s next project will star a famous UK actress as a nun in love, it has been revealed.
Released on Netflix back in February, the miniseries followed Liverpool actor Stephen Graham as a father whose teenage son is accused of murdering a schoolmate.
With each of the four episodes shot in one take, Adolescence received 24.3 million views around the world in the first four days after its release.
Being viewed by 66.3 million people after two weeks, Adolescence was praised for generating important conversations and is being made available to all UK secondary schools.
In news that will please television fans, Channel 4 has announced that Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne’s next show will be a romantic drama.
Titled Falling, the series will follow Keeley Hawes as Sister Anna, a nun who falls in love with a man of the cloth.
Rising to fame in the BBC series Spooks, Keeley has gone on to appear in Ashes to Ashes, Line of Duty and Bodyguard.
Playing the role of Catholic priest David is The Lazarus Project’s Paapa Essiedu, who was recently confirmed to be playing Professor Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter series.
Speaking about the project, Jack said: “I never thought I’d write a love story, but I am very excited to be making one with the brilliant (director) Peter Hoar.
“We feel so lucky we have persuaded the mighty (and lovely) Keeley Hawes, the brilliant (and also lovely) Paapa Essiedu and the most amazing company of (lovely) actors to come make this with us.”
Falling, which is filming in Wales and Bristol, will follow the reluctant lovers who are devoted to the church and its community.
Forced to ‘wrestle with what being in love means for them, their vows and their relationship with God’, Falling will also feature Coma actor Jason Watkins, and Heartbeat’s Niamh Cusack.
Rounding off the cast is Gavin And Stacey’s Adrian Scarborough, Susan Brown from Mr Bates vs The Post Office, and Vera Drake actress Sandra Voe.
Speaking about leading the series, Keeley said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of Anna and so looking forward to working alongside the brilliant Paapa Essiedu to bring Jack Thorne’s beautiful scripts to life.”
Paapa added: “Falling is a story that has Jack Thorne’s singular talent of mining the sublime out of the ordinary running all the way through. I can’t wait to work with Keeley, Peter and the rest of the team to bring this world to life.”
The six-part show is being brought to life by producers Jack, George Ormond and George Faber, with The Last of Us’ Peter Hoar on directing duties.
