There is a possibility that Kevin De Bruyne could change his mind and stay at Man City beyond this season.

That was the bold take from former Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole who believes ‘stranger things have happened’ than De Bruyne making a U-turn on his future.

The Belgian international announced last week that he was going to leave Man City at the end of the season once his current contract expires after 10 years at the club.

But the 33-year-old inspired a superb comeback at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon as City came from 2-0 behind to beat Crystal Palace 5-2.

De Bruyne was awarded player of the match as City moved back into the top four and he proved he still is very much City’s talisman.

And Cole, who was working as a pundit on the game for TNT Sports, is hopeful he will change his mind and stay in the Premier League next season.

“I think there’s a possibility that still could happen,” Cole said when asked if De Bruyne could make a u-turn and extend his contract at City.

“When he said there about playing pain-free, there is nothing worse than playing with something sore and people won’t know that’s affecting you and it might take 10-15 per cent off your game.

“When you are playing pain-free then the shackles are off and you are feeling back to your best again. Maybe that was the case earlier in the season where he felt hampered by injury.

“But who knows, we have seen stranger things happen. From a Premier League perspective you would love to see him stay here at this club or somewhere else.”
