It was 7am on a chilly Thursday morning and a Manchester Evening News reporter was standing alongside more than a dozen police officers outside a derelict looking unit near Strangeways prison.

The M.E.N. was there to witness a raid on a premises which police suspected was being used to store counterfeit goods after our tip-off.

Welcome to this week’s ‘Unmissable’, our digest of the stories we think you might have missed.

This week we’re focusing on a significant investigation conducted by the M.E.N.

The story, published over the weekend, revealed how some of the shops shut down on Bury New Road in Cheetham Hill have moved their sale of hooky gear online after a police crackdown in the area.

Our reporter found that sellers have taken to Telegram, a highly-encrypted messaging and social media app, to openly advertise fake designer bags, t-shirts, jackets and accessories to thousands of members. We infiltrated the group and made a purchase and passed the details on to police – leading to a raid last week. The full investigation is well worth your time.

Over the weekend we also published this brilliant piece of crime writing by Chief Reporter Neal Keeling revealing the horrific history of a recovered murder weapon.

We also published an in-depth report into a struck off doctor who had faced 34 allegations containing a total of 117 claims of inappropriate behaviour, ‘unwanted touching’, sexual harassment and dishonesty.

The M.E.N. is famous for its crime reporting and its investigations, but we also do light and shade.

This weekend we published two brilliant restaurant reviews, one from Jenna Campbell about ‘Lo Jo Mate’ and another by Dianne Bourne about her visit to acclaimed chef Aiden Byrne’s new restaurant in Knutsford. Both are beautifully written examples of the informed and clever food writing we’re so proud of.

And finally, if you’re after something to make you smile, read Emma Gill’s description of going swimming with her dog. She even manages to avoid a ‘doggy paddle’ headline pun.

Have a great week.
