Over a decade since introducing his post-apocalyptic world, where human scientists launch a desperate quest to save the species with the help of a race of artificial life forms known as “Mulligans” dwelling underground, Takahide Hori will soon see the release of the next chapter: The stop-motion animated feature Junk World, in theaters in Japan on June 13. A new trailer was launched this week.

Junk World is a prequel, set 1,042 years before the events of Junk Head, and centers on a robot named Robin (who appeared under the name Parton in the first movie). The indie production was aided by online crowdfunding campaigns, which have raised over $180,000 USD.

Synopsis: Something strange has happened in the underground world… A team of humans and Mulligans hastily formed to investigate the strange happenings in the underground world. The human team led by female captain Tris and the Mulligan team led by the original clone Dante both head for their destination, the underground city of Karpbar.

Hori conceived the original story for Junk World and served as the film’s director, character designer, editor, cinematographer and composer, as well as handling modeling, animation, sound effects, VFX and voice acting duties.

The saga began with the 2013 short film Junk Head 1, which won the Best Animation prize at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. A feature film expansion, Junk Head, followed in 2017 and was awarded a Special Mention by the Satoshi Kon Award jury as a Fantasia Film Festival world premiere and earned Hori a best director honor at Fantastic Festival. The feature’s 2021 re-edit won a Golden Stork from the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival.
