Solo Leveling now has two seasons in the can, and for those who’ve been waiting for any kind of physical media release, Crunchyroll has taken their time, but it’s finally happening. The complete Season 1 of the series will be released on shiny Blu-Ray this summer, fully furnished with extras.
How many extras you get, though, depends on the box. Solo Leveling Season 1 will be released in both a Standard and a Collector’s Edition. Both versions contain the extras on the disc: a documentary called The Leveling of Solo Leveling, character-specific videos, the special recap episode that was released as “Episode 7.5,” and the obligatory textless opening and closing sequences.
If you spring for the Collector’s Edition you’ll also get the following physical bonuses: four art cards, a sticker sheet, and a 68-page art book featuring an exclusive interview with action director Yoshihiro Kanno, plus previously released interviews with the Japanese cast and staff, and hand-selected stills. Both sets will hit stores July 22.
Based on the manhwa by Korean cartoonist Clugong, Solo Leveling is all about Sung Jinwoo, a man who lives in a world plagued by portals to another dimension. Every day monsters emerge from those portals to terrorize citizens. Humanity has risen up to fight back, however, with the formation of the Hunters — people whose job it is to fight the monsters within the dungeons they dwell and keep them from terrorizing folks.
Jinwoo’s world works on RPG mechanics with people literally “leveling up” with new abilities once they’ve slain enough monsters. Since Jinwoo himself had no abilities; they called him “The Weakest Hunter of All Mankind”….until the fateful day he figured out a systematic way to level up on his own and become incredibly powerful (and that’s what the title means). Jimwoo’s ultimate goal is to obtain the ingredients for the Elixir of Life, which he needs to save his sick mother.
Now that we have Season 1, where’s Season 2? For now, nowhere except on the Crunchyroll app. Both existing seasons of Solo Leveling are streamable at any time if you have a subscription; a third season is in production now.
