An array of Hollywood stars will be lighting up the barnyard in Andy Serkis’ new animated adaptation of Animal Farm. Lording over the herd is Seth Rogen (The Studio), who will voice the despotic pig Napoleon in this take on George Orwell’s allegory of authoritarianism, first published in 1945.
The cast also features Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Oscar winner Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Emmy winner Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Kathleen Turner (Serial Mom) and Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel).
In addition to directing the pic, Serkis (Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle), known for his motion-capture performances in the Planet of the Apes and Lord of the Rings films, will voice the cynical old donkey, Benjamin. Animal Farm is scripted by Nick Stoller (Storks, Captain Underpants, The Muppets).
Based on the ever-relevant book, the film follows a group of animals who rebel against their human oppressors and take over their farm, only to encounter new challenges as the hunger for power takes hold of a pig named Napoleon. These hooved, furred and feathered revolutionaries must find the courage to fight for their freedom once more. Orwell’s books explores themes of propaganda, corruption, totalitarianism and exploitation.
Animal Farm is a production of Aniventure (Hitpig, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank) and The Imaginarium, co-founded by Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish. Producers are Adam Nagle, Dave Rosenbaum, Cavendish and Serkis; Harrelson is also an executive producer alongside Matt Reeves. Cinesite (Hitpig, Paws of Fury, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Smurfs) is handling the animation under producer Connie Nartonis Thompson (Frankenweenie). Casting was by Margery Simkin (Avatar).
