Last month I wrote about how 1995 was a turning point for theatrical animation, a time when all studio heads were looking in the wrong direction and basing predictions on the past. The traditional Pocahontas was supposed to be the big hit of the year, not the more unconventional Toy Story. But something even more unusual happened that year: the release of A Goofy Movie on April 7.
This was regarded as a C-tier filler movie, meant to plug a hole in Disney’s schedule, based on a TV series that hadn’t caught on in the way they’d hoped. No one — NO ONE — assumed we’d still be talking about A Goofy Movie thirty years later, or that it’d become the beloved Millennial classic that it is.
And oddly, getting Disney to acknowledge this has been a real uphill climb. DVD and Blu-Ray releases of this film have been sparse, hard to find and incredibly bare-bones, with little in the way of special features. It took three decades, but someone finally produced what should’ve been on the disc: Not Just A Goof, a full documentary about the making of A Goofy Movie and its cultural impact.
“Through key interviews and rare archival footage, [Not Just a Goof] explores the struggles, victories, and studio dynamics that shaped the movie,” the press release says. “More than just a behind-the-scenes look, it highlights why A Goofy Movie remains a beloved gem for the generation that grew up watching it.” Director Kevin Lima, actors Bill Farmer and Jason Marsden, and others are interviewed throughout.
A Goofy Movie is set a couple years after Goof Troop, with Max Goof having hit puberty and all the angst that comes with it. After finally working up the courage to ask out his crush Roxanne, he’s aghast that his father has scheduled a road trip for that same weekend. But Max cooks up a scheme: if he re-routes Goofy’s map to take them to the Powerline concert, he can keep his word, with his dad none the wiser. Surely Goofy won’t discover this in dramatic fashion with the harsh red light of the glove compartment highlighting his crestfallen face…right?
Not Just A Goof will be released to Disney+ this coming Monday, April 7, on the 30th anniversary of A Goofy Movie. The film itself is, of course, streamable in the same place.
