Dan Da Dan has established Science Saru as one of the most beloved anime studios out there, and now they are going to do an adaptation of one of the most beloved anime/manga franchises of all time in Ghost in the Shell. The release date is set for 2026.

Here’s a teaser trailer:

The manga Ghost in the Shell has had numerous adaptations, but the first animated adaptation, the iconic 1995 film, was much more philosophical and dialogue heavy than the more action based original manga, and pretty much every animated reimagining of the Ghost in the Shell universe has arguably borrowed more from the film more than the manga. Although it hasn’t been for sure confirmed, the promotional art for the 2026 anime seems to imply that this might be the first ever faithful adaptation of the original manga due to its designs matching the manga’s much closer than previous adaptations. At the same time, many fans expected Trigun Stampede to be a closer adaptation of the manga, and it ended up another alternate reimagining. We have no official announcement on the content of the plot, so take the rumor of it being a manga-faithful adaptation with a grain of salt. The original manga creator Masamune Shirow has stated,

“Anime adaptation-wise, this new THE GHOST IN THE SHELL marks the fourth version following those by [Mamoru Oshii], [Kenji Kamiyama], and [Kazuchika Kise]. Alternatively, if we separate GHOST IN THE SHELL and Innocence, categorize the S.A.C. series into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, divide ARISE into its own series along with The New Movie, and split SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2, this would be the tenth adaptation overall.

Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider  this the first installment of a second generation. The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.”

Although we know very little about the content of the show, the fact that Science Saru is charge should give fans confidence.

Stay tuned for further information on the new “Ghost in the Shell” in the months ahead!
