devil may cry

The existing eight episodes of Devil May Cry barely had a chance to cool themselves on Netflix’s servers before the word came down from on high: Season Two! The anime series was officially renewed one day after its Season One premiere.

“Let’s dance. Devil May Cry is officially coming back for Season 2,” Netlfix said, and revealed the poster below this article. Devil May Cry is not a direct adaption of the video game series, but captures the spirit of it.

The first three DMC games came out for the Playstation 2 in the early 2000s, and the TV series is explicitly set in that period, with the War On Terror being replaced with the War On Demons. And if you’re fighting demons, then you need the talents of Dante, the best gunslinging, somersaulting, butt-kicking quip machine around. He also happens to be at the center of the Magic Stones Maguffin Chase that makes up Season One’s plot — imagine that.

Netflix has struck oil with animated video game adaptions, and plans to produce many more. In addition to more Devil May Cry, there’s also a followup to Cyberpunk Edgerunners in the works, a second season of Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft, an adaption of Splinter Cell, and something involving Magic: The Gathering (wait, that’s a card game…)

The weird thing about all this is, we’re STILL waiting for word on a renewal of the show that started all this, Castlevania. The latest series, Castlevania Nocturne, has stalled out at Season Two with no indication of a third. Netflix hasn’t said what the fate of the show is, but the first Castlevania series went on for four seasons.

Last month the producers revealed the surprise news that Kevin Conroy was part of the voice cast. He is indeed in there, playing Vice President Baines. This means the voice tracks were recorded quite a while ago, as Conroy died in 2022.

All eight episodes of Devil May Cry are streaming now on Netflix, and more is on the way.
