You might be wondering where there is left to go for the main story in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, after the most recent season ended with….the destruction of the entire planet. In situations like this, what do you usually do? That’s right…a prequel. The next JoJo anime will be an adaption of Steel Ball Run, the arc that ran from 2004 to 2011 and took place in the 1890s.
It’s in that time period — not far off from the timeline of the first season, but in a different setting — we meet Johnny Joestar, an ex-jockey who had to quit his profession after becoming paralyzed from the waist down. With medical science being so young, there’s not much that can be done for him…which is why it’s a fortunate thing Stands exist.
One fateful day Johnny is sitting in the audience watching the current equestrian superstar, Gyro Zeppelli, compete — when he momentarily regains the ability to walk. He’s discovered his Stand ability, and that means he can compete in the upcoming Steel Ball Run, a cross-country horse race where the prize is a mouthwatering $50 million — in 1890s money!
But the trip won’t be easy for Johnny and Gyro. In this continuity, Stand abilities are common in the 19th century, whereas they didn’t really exist yet in the world of Jonathan Joestar. ALL the competing riders have Stands. You know what that means…every episode, be it standalone or two-parter, is going to feature a new enemy with a new power they’re going to have to overcome. Seems the race’s sponsor, Steven Steel, has it out for them.
Warner Bros Japan hasn’t revealed when JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run could be ready for broadcast…given that all they can show are still images, it’s probably going to be a while. But you can get ahead of the story when Viz Media starts releasing the Steel Ball Run manga in the US — the first volume comes out in English May 27.
