The cast of Toy Story lost another member last year, though you may not have realized it. The late Carl Weathers played, among other things, the role of Combat Carl in the Toy Story series. With a new movie in production, there’s now a vacancy that has to be filled…and who’re they gonna call? Ernie Hudson.
Hudson is most famous for playing Wnston Zeddmore in Ghostbusters, of course, a role he reprised recently for a sequel. But he also has a long resume of voice acting roles: he was on Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Transformers Prime among other shows.
Though the existence of Combat Carl was first mentioned in the original Toy Story (supposedly because they were not allowed to blow up a GI Joe), he wasn’t fleshed out as a character until his standout appearance in the 2013 TV special Toy Story That Time Forgot. He would graduate to the big screen in 2019’s Toy Story 4, and apparently he hangs around.
There’s still not much we know about Toy Story 5 beyond the fact that it’s being made, and this one image that was released last August. “Everybody gets ignored because Bonnie got a tablet” certainly looks like it’s part of the plot, but anything beyond that is unknown.
The big mystery is how Woody can be in that drawing after how Toy Story 4 ended. Maybe this movie takes place between movies 3 and 4. The worse choice would be to undo Woody’s character development, have him say “Guess what, I was right the first time” and leave Bo Peep. We’ll see what we get.
Hints have been dropped in interviews: Tim Allen said to a local news station “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign,” whatever that could mean. “And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.” Slip of the tongue, or is there an army of Buzz toys in the first few minutes for some reason?
All will be revealed eventually as we get closer to the official release of Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026.
