While most announcements at “Star Wars Celebration” are focused on new feature films, live-action and animated series, video game news also has some exciting reveals at the event. And now, at this year’s “Star Wars Celebration Japan”, EA announced their next Star Wars game is “Star Wars: Zero Company’.

Set during the Clone Wars, the game is a turn-based tactics game similar to “X-Com”, “Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle” or “Aliens: Dark Descent”. The official announcement from EA’s new website for the game summarizes the game as follows: “Command an elite squad through a gritty and authentic story set in the twilight of the Clone Wars. You will step into the shoes of Hawks, a former Republic officer who leads Zero Company – an unconventional outfit of professionals for hire hailing from across the galaxy.”

Here’s the trailer:

Though the game is coming from publisher EA, the actual production team is a relatively new studio called “Bit Reactor”, which is composed of several former “X-Com” game series programmers. The company is partnering with EA’s “Respawn Entertainment” (the studio behind the hit “Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order” and “Jedi Survivor”) for assistance on the game.

Greg Foertsch, the CEO and Creativew Director at Bit Reactor, had this to say following the reveal of the game: “Our vision for Star Wars Zero Company is grounded in gameplay design pillars that weave in the immersive Star Wars galaxy with engaging turn-based tactics gameplay. It’s our aim to deliver a game with an original Star Wars story from the Clone Wars era that has meaningful outcomes from player choices, and deep turn-based tactical combat with an approachable and cinematic presentation.”

Star Wars in video games suffered a drought of new material in video games after Disney bought the rights to Star Wars in 2012 and disolved “LucasArts” (the major Star Wars video game company of decades prior) in 2013. Disney gave the Star Wars license to EA for the production of new video games, but EA focused heavily on the multi-player “Star Wars: Battlefront” and “Battlefront II” (which was controversial at release for it’s heavy emphasis on loot boxes and microtransactions). It wasn’t until 2019’s “Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order” that EA started to get praise for it’s handling of the Star Wars license. While EA’s “exclusive” contract with Disney expired in 2023, and other studios now have Star Wars games in development, EA is still heavily involved in making Star Wars games, including work on a 3rd game in the “Fallen Order/Survivor” series.

No release date for “Star Wars Zero Company”has been given yet, outside of “Coming 2026”. Stay tuned for more Star Wars video game news in the months ahead!
