darth maul

There were a lot of Star Wars announcements this morning, and it wasn’t even May the 4th. Take any theatrical announcement from Lucasfilm with a grain of salt (those things always collapse) but their track record for completing animated projects is 100% so far, so we can say with confidence we’ll probably see Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord next year.

The series, in development for Disney+, stars the former Sith Lord “plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.” Sam Witwer is returning as the voice of Darth Maul (though he just went by “Maul” after departing with the Empire).

Maul has arguably the most improbable recovery of any Star Wars character, having survived being chopped clean in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi and dumped down a large pit. If George Lucas had known the character was going to have such a prolific life outside of Phantom Menace, would he have filmed that scene? Based on what I know about George he likely would have filmed it anyway and then said “you figure it out.”

Anyway, after a couple Band-Aids and an Advil Maul was good to go, so he had an arc on The Clone Wars where he tried to turn Ahsoka to the Dark Side. He also made a surprise appearance at the end of Solo, but was robbed of any true theatrical return due to low sales making a sequel impossible. His last appearance in the Star Wars timeline was as an old man on Rebels, where he attempted to manipulate Ezra Bridger to do his bidding.

This new series will take place between The Clone Wars and Rebels. Attendees of the panel where this was announced got to see a clip from the series, in which Maul frees a Twi’lek from prison, sees that she is strong with the Force and offers to train her. The clip has yet to be posted online. Maybe we’ll see something come May 4.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is set to be released on Disney+ sometime in 2026.
