After twelve episodes, Science SARU’s Dan Da Dan wrapped its first season on a tense cliffhanger. It’s been many long, cruel months since then, but a resolution is finally on the way — in the form of a theatrical premiere, entitled Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye.

When we last left our protagonists, Momo and Okarun, their growing relationship was complicated by the arrival of Jiji, Momo’s childhood friend. And THAT was complicated by the fact that Jiji is in the kind of deep supernatural doody that only our hapless pair can resolve. His house is haunted, his parents are in the hospital, and he appears to be possessed by a powerful and evil yokai.

That yokai will play the central role of the anime’s next arc, which is called Evil Eye — and the first three episodes of that season will screen as a feature, along with the end of Season One just in case you forgot what happened, plus a bonus exclusive interview with series co-directors Fuga Yamashiro and Abel Gongora. GKIDS is distributing Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye in America.

Running anime episodes in theaters is becoming trendy these days. It’s not uncommon now for popular shows to debut their season premieres on the big screen — Dan Da Dan was anticipated enough that its SERIES premiere debuted this way. It’s been enough of a success to continue that trend for another year.

A June 6 release date has been set for Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye, but the premiere of the second season itself still does not have a specific day revealed. “July” is all Science SARU and the distributors will say.

Dan Da Dan is also preparing to reach physical media shelves for the first time — a few days after Evil Eye opens, GKIDS will be releasing the complete first season on Blu-Ray in both Standard and Collector’s Edition packages. Bonus features include several interviews, a scene breakdown from the director, teasers and trailers, and the obligatory credit-less opening and closing sequences. Spring for the deluxe edition and you can add to this a 32-page book, art cards, and a die-cut sticker of Turbo Granny. Look for it June 10.
