An online auction directly benefitting over 70 animation families impacted by the devastating L.A. wildfires is set to take place later this month.
The event is part of AnimAID, a fundraising initiative spearheaded by ASIFA-Hollywood, aiming to help those in our community who lost their homes or were displaced by the events of last January.
Materials for the auction include both production artwork and original artwork created specifically for this event, as well as custom experiences and personalized offerings. Sotheby’s, which is hosting the auction, will have the items up for display at their New York gallery from tomorrow, April 11, through April 15. The auction will be open for online bidding from April 23-30.
Many people and studio are donating time and materials to this effort, including artists, studios, publicists, and ad agencies. Sotheby’s too has waived their usual auction fees to support the cause.
“AnimAID is a powerful reminder of the unity and compassion that define our animation community,” ASIFA-Hollywood executive director Aubry Mintz said in a statement. “As we face the devastating aftermath of the wildfires, this initiative allows us to come together not only to provide essential relief, but also to honor the artists and professionals who have given so much to the world of animation.”
Highlights from the auction include:
- A custom character design and original drawing by Nico Marlet.
- A chance to voice a minor character in Sony Pictures Animation’ upcoming feature GOAT.
- Tours of animation studios including Walt Disney Animation Studios, Sony Pictures Animation, Dreamworks, and Lucasfilm, as well as the personal office of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz.
- 3d-printed heads used in the production of Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning film Pinocchio.
- Storyboards from Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and other projects.
- A maquette from Laika’s Paranorman.
- The original character design of Emily from Corpse Bride drawn by Carlos Grangel.
- An original sketch by Chris Sanders from the development of The Wild Robot.
