Manchester United new boy Patrick Dorgu is set to add to his four caps for Denmark after being included in the squad for their Nations League quarter-final with Portugal this month.

The 20-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Lecce for £25million in January and has done his prospects of more regular international action with Denmark no harm, earning praise from national team coach Brian Riemer.

Denmark play a back four and Riemer has admitted he has had doubts over Dorgu due to his role with Lecce, where he often played as more of a winger than a defender.

Dorgu has made five appearances for United since his switch from the Serie A side, four of them at left wing-back after making his debut on the right, and Riemer has seen more defensive work from him that has helped to win him over and earn him a call-up to the international side.

“He has really convinced me,” he said. “I dare to tell you now that I was a little doubtful in Lecce, because when I watched the games, he was more of a winger than a back, and his defensive skills were… debatable. But I have seen him many times now, and I am actually quite impressed with what he has achieved defensively.

“Defensively, my doubts were there, and he has convinced me there. He has done it strongly. There are still small things that can be done better, but even in the best league in the world, he has delivered.

“I think he has proven that for Manchester United. I know that they play with a wing-back, but many times he has ended up as a back, and that is why I have had him under the microscope and looked at how he defends. The situations I have analysed have convinced me that he can do both.”

Dorgu is currently serving a domestic suspension after being sent-off against Ipswich and he will miss the Premier League trip to Leicester City this weekend, but he is available for Thursday’s Europa League last-16 second leg against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.
